Since December 1, 2014, Indonesian citizens holding e-passports can apply for a visa waiver and starting March 27, 2023, this visa waiver application can be done online through the JAVES (Japan Online Visa Application) system. This visa waiver is valid for 3 years or until the passport expires.
If you do not have an e-passport, you must apply for a temporary visit visa to JVAC.
When can I apply for a Visa Waiver?
At least 1 week before departure, because the verification process by the Japanese Embassy takes approximately 1-3 working days. So, do not apply for a visa waiver too soon.
How much does a visa waiver cost?
For online applications, there is no fee (FREE), but if you register offline through the Japan Visa Application Center (JVAC). There is an application fee of around Rp. 250,000 per person.
**The visa waiver is a short-term visit visa valid for 15 days and is only available for e-passport holders.
Meanwhile, the single-entry visa (temporary visitor) can be applied for by regular passport holders and allows a stay of up to 90 days. You can find more info about the single-entry visa here.
Visa Waiver Requirements
E-passport. Yes, the only requirement is an electronic passport. Before registering online, what you need to prepare is a scan of the e-passport in the section:
Passport cover
Personal data
Endorsement
These parts will be uploaded later when applying for a visa.
How to apply for a Visa Waiver online
Create an account at
https://www.evisa.mofa.go.jp/personal/logintokoLater, you will get an email notification for email verification. After verifying, please log back in.
After successfully logging in, make an application. Please click "New Registration". Fill in your data and upload the e-passport scan that you have prepared.
After finishing filling in, please submit. You will receive a notification that your application has been accepted with a temporary registration number.
Within 2x24 hours, you will receive a "Notification of Visa Exemption Registration completed" email if your visa application is successful.
How to use the visa waiver
Online visa waivers do not come with a visa exemption sticker, so how do you show you have one?
Please log in to the JAVES system.
Click "Application list", and the visa application list page will appear. Please click on the application according to your name.
On the visa exemption registration notice page, please click "to display" if you want to be shown, or you can download the PDF version.
My suggestion: don’t forget to print it out, just in case, because a screenshot of the "Notification of Visa Exemption Registration" is not accepted as a substitute. From my experience using the visa waiver, airport staff in Indonesia will ask to see the visa exemption registration during check-in.
